May bloggy

I know it’s a massive cliche, but I cannot believe how fast the year has gone! As a little dude cruising around in early primary school, the time between my sixth and seventh birthday felt like a lifetime. Now it feels like years pass and I’m still the same person, thinking about the exact same stuff. Anyway, that was my intention for this blog; to keep me reflecting on things as time passes and to keep me accountable to document them. So far I’ve missed a few in my goal to do these monthly but here I am for the month of May!

Since I last wrote, I finished my studio build in my garage, which has been a game changer. I’ve got a lot more time with the family and more time to work on art and music. Win win. In theory this has also opened up more time for more self-care like excersise and meditation – but this hasn’t translated yet. Isn’t it funny how we always think the barriers to doing the things we want are out of our control but a lot of the time we are the thing that is in the way? Even though I have an extra few hours in my day due to not having to travel to the studio, I still have managed to find ways not to do these things. I suspect it has more to do with some self discipline that I need to enforce again. Anyway here’s some pics of the studio!

After a month or two of just grinding trying to finish things, the new studio setup has allowed me more space to experiment and be curious about things. I’ve felt the creativity creep back in  and can tell there’s heaps there to be excavated in the coming months.

I also invested in some serious gear- by far the most expensive single purchase I’ve ever made when it comes to music – a ’79 Neumann U87, which sounds phenomenal. The first time I heard someone sing on it, it was a wow moment.

I shot a music video for my solo project. The first song is going to come out late July. I’m looking forward to sharing new music that is 100% my brain and soul but also a little nervous. I’ve definitely had the moments of thinking it is the worst music anyone has ever made and then moments of feeling elated that I created it. Right now I think it’s pretty good and worth sharing.

Since the studio has been done I’ve finished an album with Harry Foxton and sent the tracks off to Matt Kelly (City and Colour) to add some sparkle to. A beautiful new single with Joan and the Giants. Tracking another solo song today with piano maestro Tony Bourke.

For the next blog I am thinking of doing a video diary of a day in the studio (thanks for the idea Kesh). Let me know if you have any other content you’d like me to get as I truly find it hard thinking about and creating content!
